FILM REVIEW THE LORD OF THE RINGS : THE RETURN OF THE KING

 1. INTRODUCTION

The duration of running time was 251 minutes and the film was The Lord of The Rings: Return of The King it was the third and the final film of The Lord King trilogy and the director was Peter Jackson also a main screenwriter along with Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. This film was released on 2003 and this film was an adaptation from the third volume of the novel The Lord of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. This film was rated as the no 7 as the most recommended and has win 11 Oscars awards. Besides, the great of its great storyline here were the actors that play an important part in this film, without them this film wouldn’t be this spectacular. It features Elijah Wood as Frodo, Andy Serkis as Gollum, and Sean Astin as Sam that they were through their journey on making a final way towards the Mount of Doom to destroy the ring unfortunately Frodo was mistaken of Gollum intentions.  Next the major actors were Liv Tyler as Arwen, Bernard Hill as Theoden, Cate Blanchet as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond, Miranda Otto as Eowyn, David Wenham as Faramir, Karl Urban as Eomer, John Noble as Denethir II, Ian Holm as Bilbo, and Sean Bean as Boromir. Plus, Billy Boyd as Pippin, Dominic Monaghan as Merry, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas who join the forces together to against the Sauron and his legions at Minas Tirith.

 

2. PLOT SUMMARY

The plot summary on this movie from what I can conclude was, it was a war between the orc and the human. The villain which is Nazgūl that lead orc to attack the human. It happens where Pippin insists to touch the dark globe and he saw something that he shouldn’t. Then, Gandalf and Pippin went to Minas Tirith to meet Denethor the cities of Steward but the king didn’t like Gandalf. At there, Gandalf call the darkness by asking Pippin to light up the wood from the tower. Meanwhile, the Hobbit which is Sam and Frodo were assigned to destroy the ring at the Mount Doom. On their way to the destroy the ring the Smeagol or Gollum helps the Hobbit as guide to Mount Doom however he has the other motive. Since the orc army was too many and they had many weapons that can’t be compared to human’s army that lead by Faramir and army from Rohan. Luckily, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli arrive at the battlefield by help of the Death Army in a promise. Under the Aragorn leadership they unite together and march to Mordor.

3. DESCRIPTION

Next, when talking about “Lord of The Ring” for sure Gollum will be slipped on my mind because the appearance by itself small, slimy that capture viewers’ attention like me. Besides, I notice lyrics of the music on this movie basically inspired from what they happen. For example, this one scene captures my heart where Pippin sing a song for Denethor and it show where Faramir and the army march to city of Osgiliath and Pippin remember all his friends when he sings this song. When watching this movie, on a certain part I will feel scared and disgusted when I saw the Orc since the appearance itself it means it does leave a big impact to viewers. Not to forget the sound of the battlefield the metal weapon makes me goosebumps.

 

4. ANALYSIS

The analysis that I can make was the lighting that use in this movie. Basically, we can see there were two types of different lighting that used in this movie for example in the middle of the movie mostly they will use low key lighting to show the Orc, Nazgūl, Gollum or the villain to create the suspense and the mystery. For the semiotic analysis the symbols that we can see on this movie was “The Great Eye of Sauron” it was the place were Sam and Frodo destroy the ring. The Great Eye of Sauron were the symbol of the Dark Lord. For the narrative structure analysis, it follows by Frodo and Sam on their journey to destroy the ring. In the opening it shows how the Smeagol saw the ring and they start fight with each other to own the ring and he turn into Gollum. The theme of this movie was death and immortality we can see that human were sacrifice their self by went to the war for the victory and there are certain that immortal like Gandalf and Gimli. Not to forget for the mise-en-scene analysis this movie was received awards as the best visual effects. On this scene we can see how the Director Peter put his effort between Aragorn and Arwen. He creates a low lighting to create a romantic mood on this scene and they were surrounded by the tree and a bird so it seems more like a dreamy. On this film we can see the realistic makeup and costume on the Orc it looks terrifying and real. The set on this movie were realistic although there was certain part that they shoot on the green screen but it didn’t disappoint our expectation.

5. CONCLUSION

Finally, I have finished watch this movie although the runtime were 4 hours and at the beginning it was kind of dull but I finished it within one day since the plot was great. Since this movie were an adaptation, I’m sure for those trilogy lovers they will loves this movie. Moreover, this film was not about the war and fight it also has the scene of friendship and romantic that the director inserts in this film. So, I’m genuinely recommend this movie for those who didn’t watch it, yet it might seem long but once you watch it you will definitely into it.
